A summer evening with the worship of
What is Taizé?
For over 50 years the ecumenical Taizé community in France has been a source of inspirational worship. Drawing in people from all denominations and walks of life, the style of worship and prayer is simple, unique and varied, but always emphasises participation, space and quite reflection.
What will happen in the service?
The service will be a blend of music from Taizé with one or two items from other worship traditions. It will be mostly quiet and reflective, with candles, bible readings, written and spontaneous prayer, and periods of silence. There is no sermon. The music will be accompanied by a small ensemble of classical instruments.
Does it cost anything?
Admission to the service is free. There will be a retiring offering.
How do I get there?
St Peter’s Chapel is the oldest church in England, and can be found at the end of the road heading east from Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex. The nearest postcode is CM0 7PN, but note that the chapel is half a mile east of this. Visitors are encouraged to enter the spirit of pilgrimage by parking at the end of the surfaced road and walking the last half-mile along the track, but it is usually possible to drive up to the chapel if you need to.
Who is leading it?
The service will be led by Richard Hubbard. He is a lecturer in music and worship at London School of Theology, and directs the Cantus Firmus Choir. He has many years’ experience in devising worship events that draw on a wide variety of genres, combining our rich heritage of Christian music with contemporary worship expressions.
The event is organised by Cantus Firmus Trust, a Colchester-based charity that seeks to promote and resource the use of creative arts in worship.
